Chapter 3: Driving the transition

If we, the one third of humanity that currently enjoys the benefits of modern life, continue producing and consuming, travelling and spending our free time in the way we do today, and if China, India and the rest of the world eventually catch up with our unsustainable lifestyles, we will leave a planet for our children which will be less generous to humanity, forcing the coming generations to lead much more frugal lives. Our grandparents’ generation, our parents’ generation and our own have brought about truly miraculous progress; will we be able to once again work a wonder of similar dimensions: adding sustainability to the equation? In this chapter we discuss key elements of a new global development paradigm and we look into the role ICSOs can play in initiating, shaping and leading the required great transition of mankind.
